Happy New Year to all, and Happy Birthday to Emma (our big girl turned 10 on New Year's Day). She seems to think she needs extra cookies for the extra 'Emma' that has come from all the extra cookies. She and Kali have certainly taken S-P-O-I-L-E-D to a new, embarrassing level. Not only do they think they need a cookie for coming in from outside, but SOMEONE (not mentioning any names, but she's big, black, and seriously stubborn) now thinks going outside in the first place warrants a prize. Sheesh.Kali appeared with a black knit cap from someplace and buried it - sorta - by the front walk. It fits in quite nicely with the rest of the landscaping. We're still hopeful that at least one or two pieces of her impre$$ive orange rubber ball collection will somehow turn up. Maybe when we blast the yard to get rid of the #$*%&^&#$%*@$#^@$%$#% moles and their #$*%&^&#$%*@$#^@$%$#% tunnels, some of them will bounce back into view. I'm beginning to think Kali and the moles have a pact to drive me nuts. Too late.
Meanwhile, Sami flits back and forth from Jekyll to Hyde, depending on how the weather impacts her ability to reduce the mole population (it ain't easy working with turf the consistency of concrete). We like to think it's OUR mole population she's reducing. She's never been a contender for Miss Congeniality, but the combination of wicked wind and frigid temps of a winter that already seems two years long isn't helping anything.
In case you hadn't noticed, there are finally pictures of winter on the home page! Nothing like waiting until the season's half over (we wish) to put some up.
The three school folks have returned to their grind, which means I get to return to mine. Taxes. Truly, I would rather repeat my root canal. Alas, that's not an option (for which I suppose I should be thankful), so off to bury my nose where I wish it didn't belong.
~ 2009 - January update ~
(Zero to Ten in Only 12 Hours)No, I'm not talking about the speed demon masquerading as our '88 Camry station wagon. During the night last night (which was really already today - the 16th - when it started), the temperature plunged to one. Then the sun started appearing, presumably to heat things up, and the temperature went backwards to zero. All I can say is BRRRR... because both my fingers and the keyboard would rather be elsewhere. Like Florida.
I don't hear the phone ringing off the wall for reservations....
~ 2009 - January update #2 ~
(Rub-a-dub-dub, Washin' Plates in the Tub)Does this month seem twice as long as usual, or what? This is the 19th and already the third update, skimpy as it is. I admit I do grab ways to avoid working on the taxes, but I also have my limits. Specifically, I don't believe I secretly yearned to wash dishes in the bathtub for what will likely be 5 days by the time the temperature hits a mark above freezing on Thursday. That will be the 22nd... with 9 days left in this incredibly long month. By then, I'll have to clean the tub again.
Why, you surely wonder, am I washing dishes in the bathtub? Because while we have water (a seriously big YAHOO!!!), we also have a stubbornly frozen kitchen sink drain that refused to respond even to the blowtorch tactic, which thankfully did not set the deck on fire. It's a good thing the bathroom is just off the kitchen, but not so swell that it is THE bathroom. And since the tub faucet is useless, I get to use the shower hose, which can have a mind of its own and drips in protest after a while (Hey there, Bozo, washing dishes ain't in my job description). And since the tub drain is also useless, I have to work fast so we don't run out of hot water as it slowly drains away despite my creative plugs: a washrag, covered by a salad plate, covered by an old, heavy towel, covered by the dishes I get to wash. Martha Stewart will never accuse me of swiping her ideas.
Is it spring yet?
Emma, Kali, and I hiked up the mountain to see some snow and try out the new camera. I LOVED the old one, a little Fuji Finepix we gave Katie for her 16th birthday and later inherited from her (wonder if the same will apply to her car). However, it met an unfortunate, untimely end when I dropped it on the concrete floor (with the zoom lens out - ouch) and had to be replaced. Sparing you the details of the search for a cheap, easy, outstanding camera that was outstandingly cheap and easy, I finally chose one and am just now experimenting, as is obvious. Katie happened to be home to load it or whatever you have to do to a new camera, and I've only had to email her twice (okay, twice today) with questions. I may have it figured out within the year. Here's proof that we three big girls really did move today:
Emma is incredulous at the thought that WE are planning to walk up the cabin road when we can't even see it.
Energizer Kali has zoomed ahead as usual, already a mere blip at the top because she probably sees the road better in white.
She's also trying not to slide backwards to square one, which is where Emma would like to remain.
Don't worry; these aren't the cabin towels. Just don't tell Randy they're OURS....
~ 2009 - January update #3 ~
(THAWED OUT!!!)After a full week of washing dishes in the tub, I happened to notice that there was no water standing in the kitchen sink. NONE! Like a toddler who is beginning to discover the magic of handles and cause and effect, I turned the water on and watched in awe and enormous glee as it went on down the drain. And then did it again! And then walked past a few minutes later and did it AGAIN.
No, I don't get out much.
The big hairballs and I did enjoy a lot of outside work on Friday, the 23rd, even though the work itself wasn't all particularly enjoyable,
because the weather WAS. Made us feel like dancing, or at least rolling in something...
...or finding a limb to gnaw on because SOMEone has buried all of her $$$ orange rubber balls... but we won't name names, will we, K-A-L-I?
~ 2009 - February ~
(A Bloggin' We Will Go...)It's February??? Whoa.
We've had a terrific first two days of the month weatherwise. We're back to Mother Nature's global-warming joke, though; the temperature is falling as I type, and the weather ladybug is about to blink herself into oblivion with some sort of news. I'm afraid to look.
Big news is that I'm a blogger now! Yep, right in the middle of my beloved tax fun, great pal/fellow SMA mom, Cindy Schaefer (who wrote the foreword in The Jeffrey Journey), persuaded me to jump overboard with her in a joint endeavor called The Suite Life of Lucy and Ethel. Chalk it up to not enough crayons in the box or something. Although we knew
almostabsolutely nothing about the world of blogging other than everyone else seemed to be inhabiting it, we have impressed ourselves with our progress in a mere week. We've mastered hot links (OH NO!), gadgets, and EDIT, and I've worn a path to the HELP centers. All of them. For those of you who have never visited a blog, don't be afraid... we aren't selling anything (or charging!). HOWEVER, if you find you're really bored, feel free to hop over to the site and - while you're having a good time - click on the ads; they're computer-generated based on our content and quite interesting so far. We understand SMA- and 'Lucy'-related ads but haven't figured out the Papa Johns ad yet. Maybe we won one! Anyway, the ad-clicking generates pennies per click, and since we haven't been invited aboard the bailout bandwagon yet, we appreciate all the clicks we can get....Some day I will clean this page up. Some day I will clean the house up. Some day I will finish the taxes up. Some day I will clean this page up. Some day I will clean the house up. Some day I will finish the taxes up....
~ 2009 - February update ~
It's already the 14th, and this is only the second time I've been here! Blame - or thank - Uncle Sam for keeping me glued to the numbers for what seems like two years. Sheesh.
Big news is that after weeks, the pond finally thawed out yesterday, on Friday the 13th and my dad's birthday! The wind gusts stayed on overdrive for two long days; I almost expected to see catfish on the deck.
Other big news is that the futon in the cabin is sporting a new cover! Courtesy of global warming, Uncle Sam, or midlife madness, it's a far cry from the previous conservative forest green. It doesn't go with anything, but I didn't care - it's cute! And while the big soft, lumpy pillow looks okay, the big hard, lumpy one didn't. Neither did the plaid valances or the placemat on the coffee table (this is fascinating, I know). Drum roll...
And since you can't tell a thing about it, probably courtesy of the operator of the new camera (who has NOW opened the book of directions in an attempt to figure them out at some point), here's a swatch picture, because it really is cute!
AND the annoying electrical cords for the reading lights above the futon and bed have been replaced with real switches! Golly durn, Jethro, weeze movin' up in the wurld, aint' we.
Before I try to tackle all that was tossed aside during my tax fun, here's a picture of Sami for absolutely no reason, other than she actually looks docile here. A unique photo op for sure.
PS - Don't forget to check out the new blog, The Suite Life of Lucy and Ethel!
Happy Heart Day!

~ 2009 - February update #2 ~
What happened to February - only one more day??? And I just noticed that we lose an hour NEXT WEEKEND? Bummer.
The hairballs had a big day yesterday. You can check the blog for the whole shebang and pictures, but suffice it to say Sami caught something on our front walk and left the innards, which Kali inhaled, then Kali found a real treasure off the mountain trail and Emma ate the remains, which were apparently cured to perfection. Yum.
I am excited to report that the daffodils and tulips at Jeffrey's site insist that spring is coming!
Of course, this will likely be the scene at some point, but they should know that by now:
Anyway, the weather and daffodils and the hairballs'
disgustingdelectable finds inspired me to find some pictures of springs past (not to be confused with the daylight savings thingy next weekend, when we spring - ugh - forward).

We've had some visitors in the area, thanks to a few days of mild weather:

Success and waiting for more. Come on, little fishies...
At first I thought Congress was out looking for more pork, but then I realized these turkeys were legit.
~ 2009 - March ~
Whoa, what a difference a day makes. Let's all welcome March, the month of SPRING....

The snow was really pretty, really peaceful, really deep in places.
~ 2009 - March update ~
We lost an hour today but gained a bit of sanity working outside in weather that couldn't have been more perfect! Emma went swimming in the pond, and Kali found mud... and then we made HER get into the pond. Had to throw a stick out for her first, as she can't understand the purpose of getting wet if there's nothing to fetch, but that's okay. We were all happy campers today....

~ 2009 - March update #2 ~
Friday, March 20. It's here - SPRING!!! While we've been here long enough to know that the official arrival of spring hardly guarantees the end of winter (and the temperature has dropped significantly to prove it), it does provide hope that we'll soon get to mow again....
Kali unearthed a grungy ball. Now if she would just unearth the $$$ balls...
Sami let Kali irritate her (staring is irritating, you know) until she'd had enough
Emma chillin'

We are eager to get some new pictures up and equally eager for someone to learn how to take good pictures with the camera-that-is-not-new-anymore-and-supposed-to-be-easy. Emma, you don't look too busy....
~ 2009 - March update #3 ~
Today is the 28th, although it could easily be the 27th or 26th. Or 25th. Every day lately has looked like the one before - foggy, rainy, muddy, chilly, dreary, and muddy. The one variable has been the amount of wind to stir it all up. Yep, spring's here.
We have managed to find some dry moments, though. Randy snagged one in which he tossed in the subtle mention of a big rock that would "sure look good in the new waterfall... if we could somehow figure out how to move it." Translation: Would you help me move it, please, please, please?!?!?
Of course, honey.
Meanwhile, our crew was busy as usual.
~ 2009 - April ~
Jeepers, it's already almost the end of the third day of the month! Spring has sprung, and we've had the weather to prove it. It's rained every day for too many days to count, but because of it, a few of Kali's buried treasures have been spied... tho not by Kali.
Yippee - TWO of Kali's $$$ orange rubber balls!
Master Waterfall Maker has been hard at work on the new waterfall when it wasn't raining or dark. He's not finished but will hopefully get the white pipe covered up tomorrow, when we've been promised gorgeous weather.
The concrete should be in fine shape in time for the snow showers expected Monday and Tuesday.
Thanks a lot, Ray.
~ 2009 - April update ~
(From Mowin' to Snowin' to Mowin')Ray wasn't kidding. We got soggy, sloppy snow showers and more:
From grass collector to snow collector
We do have encouraging proof of spring!
~ 2009 - May ~
Holy cow - what happened to April??? Now it's the third day of May. Or is it already JUNE???
I could excuse the delinquency in updates by saying we've been busy around here, and I'd be right. We've been enjoying the opportunity to slave outside (which is an excuse as to why we haven't been slaving inside)! Randy and I have each had a ball mowing a few times, which could easily be an daily event, thanks to these balls:
Meanwhile, Randy fixed a walkway from the driveway to the house (the fact that no one thought about how obnoxious the weeds would remain no matter what was piled on top without first dousing them with industrial strength weed killer might post a slight dilemma for the days ahead, but it looks nice!):
![]()
We have also removed the unsightly porch pots and their dead dirt, dug out for a flower bed, which Emma heard as 'her-bed,'
and replaced them with official, almost-finished real flower beds!
Do those pictures make you dizzy, or is it just my head that's spinning?!?!?
Or maybe it's just the dead baby squirrel on the porch. Thanks, Sami.
Kali loves the flower beds and has shown her appreciation more than once:
And while we're thrilled Kali's thrilled, we are not so thrilled at the thought of keeping a bag of mulch handy for sprucing up after Kali's demonstrations of approval. Fencing is coming, girl....Anyway, we were all enjoying getting some Vitamin D, which has tempered our
grouchy personalitiescabin fever. Even Sami's.
I say 'were' because it's been cloudy/drizzly for the past week and is supposed to be rainy for the next week. But at least the heater's OFF for a few months! YAHOO!
~ 2009 - May update ~
Here we are with just one week left of May. What's going on?!?!? Well, thanks for asking. I'll tell you what's going on :)
First, Matthew, our firstborn, graduated from college!
He actually graduated in December and returned immediately as a graduate assistant to work on his master's, but he had to wait until May to walk. What a big day! Lots of smiles, lots of hustling (we had to get him moved pronto from his dorm to his new apartment), and lots of eating (thanks to Paul and Jaymie, who fed us royally). Poor Katie was stuck at Cape Hatteras in a 2-week photo class... in a house on the beach. Yep, poor thing. No matter, we ate plenty for her, too.
The next day was Mother's Day, followed by my birthday, followed by Jeffrey's 12th angel birthday!
We've enjoyed cool temperatures and are officially out of the drought. YIPPEE!!! Actually, we thought we were out of the drought some time ago, when our yard was so mushy Randy was summoned to fix a path from the driveway to the car, but apparently we were mistaken. Anyway, we are green and lush and getting to mow as often as we can in between rain spurts.
We're happy to see evidence of the wild blackberries (stickers and all) all over!
And, finally, what's an update without a picture of Kali rolling in the grass....
