We have an artist in our midst! Frequent cabineer, Leslie Macon, is mesmerized by the beauty of her surroundings
wherever she happens to be (which would be, preferably, here). Her still life and visionary art works are stunning,

The Suite Life of Lucy and Ethel

Started by Helen ('Lucy') and good friend, Cindy Schaefer ('Ethel,' who wrote the foreword to The Jeffrey Journey),
the blog is a lotta things... but mostly a lotta fun!

Make a Difference for a Furball... or a Bunch of Them!

All of our critters over the past 34 years - except first hairball, guinea pig Ethyl-Boy (don't ask) - have landed in the Baldwin Zoo courtesy of either a shelter or rescue of some variety. We even graciously donated a spare 'hey-this-looks-like-a-nice-houseful-of-suckers' potential addition - a big, sweet boxer - to Helen's brother Paul and his family because he looked so much like their own boxer. The dog, not Paul.

SO... in a quest to help reward those who adopt furballs, we are offering the following swell options:

Option 1. Adopt a dog or cat from a shelter (Humane Society, etc.) or rescue group and get:

$5 off one night's stay,

$15 off two nights' stay, or

$20 off three nights' stay.

Option 2. Adopt a dog or cat from a shelter (Humane Society, etc.) or rescue group and pay the regular price for the cabin (now THAT sounds like a bargain), and we will donate:

$5 for one night's stay,

$15 for two nights' stay, or

$20 off three nights' stay to the adoption agency.

In either case, the usual minimal pet fee will be waived for your first pet-plus getaway.

A Save-Your-Sanity Note: While we break out the gauze just thinking about hauling OUR fine feline Sami on a getaway ('cause that's exactly what we'd be doing - looking for a getaway), you may certainly bring your new kitty if you're overly adventurous. OR... you can bring the paperwork INSTEAD of the kitty-kitty and enjoy the same terrific offer. And everyone will be happy, sane, and intact!

If you work with a shelter or rescue group or know someone who does, feel free to pass this on!

Time for a Scrapbook Page!

If you have any terrific photos from your stay at Angel Mountain Cabin that you would like to share, please email them, and Helen will get them up as soon as possible (she works with a slow brain). We also welcome news of the non-photo variety, like celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or proposal(!), or taking a much-needed nap! We'll include only as much identifying info as you'd like, so zap away (and please remember to name furballs!). Thanks to those who have sent something for the Scrapbook page!

Show and Tell!

One of our cabineers, Ann White, surprised us with a beautiful angel she had made. It is perfect for our collection, so we asked Ann if we could share her info with others. She agreed, so here it is!

Clay Things by Ann

From Ann's card:

Hand built clay items are one of a kind creations. Each piece is constructed or sculpted of individually created pieces and welded together to form a unique piece of art, so no two pieces are exactly the same. The use of fine porcelain or stoneware clays and quality glazes insure artistic creativity.

Serious Stuff

On 10-18-07, Connor Galloway, the smart, happy, football-loving 12-year old son of Dale and Michele Galloway (formerly of Ashe County and a fellow football coaching family), was found hanged in his room. It was determined that he had become another statistic of a horrific activity called the choking game. What makes this 'game' even more frightening is that the participants are typically bright, well-adjusted, and conscientious enough to find thrills in what they consider a legal manner, if not a parentally-approved one... i.e., the perceived leaders - role models - of the class. The game, known by many names (Airplaning, Blackout, California High, Dream Game, Elevator, Fainting Game, 5 minutes of Heaven, Flatliner, Funky Chicken, Gasp, Hangman, Harvey Wall Banger, Knock-Out, Passout, Roulette, Snuff, Space Monkey, Suffocation, Tingling, Twitching, to name a few), is claiming an increasing number of unsuspecting lives and wreaking permanent, devastating havoc on others because curious children (some as young as 5!), teens, and young adults are playing the game ALONE, without the so-called safety net of accomplices who can rescue them from the strangulation danger they have created for themselves via belt, rope, sheet, etc.

As a way to channel their grief into a positive direction and to alert other parents of this nightmare, Dale and Michele did two interviews, shortly after Connor's death and a year later, and have produced a DVD of a seminar in which Dale was the key speaker. They are most eager to share the DVD's, so if you would like a copy, please email them.

In their quest, Dale and Michele are sharing two sites with information regarding this terrifying pastime:

The DB Foundation and GASP

In addition, there is an online petition to urge the inclusion of warnings and information about the choking game in the D.A.R.E. curriculum and school health programs. Simply enter your name on the right side of the page and complete the easy form. Meanwhile, PLEASE share this with anyone who has contact of some sort with children, teens, and young adults (that would be just about everyone). This 'game' is anything but and has dire, permanent consequences for those who play and those who love them.

Finally, Dale and Michele have recently formed Connor's HEART (Help Eliminate Adolescent Risk Taking), a NC-based grassroots effort supported by the National Peace Foundation. Please consider taking a few minutes to check out the site and see if you might be able to help.

Thank you.
